Step One – Ban the Red Cup!

First of all, Jaime, avert your eyes!!!

So, I added a couple extra points to my “Spice up your life” plan…I had every intention of including these in my original post, but it was hard to remember them all at one time!!

SO anyway, my first step is to help control my finances. And Vanessa’s post last week reminded me of the fact that I have some ‘bucks worthy tools at home.

So, my first official part of Project Spice up your Life is to ban the red cup (*GASP*)

peppermint_mocha

I do love me a peppermint mocha and an egg nog latte. But I can make these items at home for a fraction of the cost (maybe, what, an extra carton of milk per week??? I already have all the other stuff!!)

Low and behold…

My Nespresso machine (it uses pods specifically made for the machine…YUP, it’s pretty yuppie!)

and my trusty milk frother! (I want to try the “Baileys trick” you know from the Baileys ads?? In it…and I am curious to try egg nog…but I think it has a lower boiling point than milk…so maybe it would scald?? I have a little hand whisky frother thing that could work for egg nog too)…

And then I have some syrups and (not pictured because I ran out but my WONDERFUL friend purchased some for me!) some caramel sauce for Caramel Macchiatos and my mocha powder that I was too lazy to get down for this!!

So this Red Cup ban is going to be ALL the way through November AND December…well, up until Christmas…I plan on making it until Boxing Day on this ban.

AND I even have some money left on a couple of my Starbucks cards, so I am doing this on principle alone!!

(I can’t believe how long it took me to write this post through WordPress on my laptop…I am going to give Windows Live Writer a try this weekend when I do a picture post from all my Halifax pictures!!! Maybe that will make me stray from my Mac…at least for blogging!)

  • Im with you on the No Bucks for a while (and I have about 3.00 left on my “swipy card thing there” :) ).
I plan to save all that money and spend it on hanukkah gifts!

  • I am so glad I prefer the cheaper Tim’s over Sbux!

  • Wow! You have a whole cafe at your house! That is awesome. I bet you can even make them better than Starbucks after a bit of practice!

  • With all those tools and goodies at home you won’t even need to think about going anywhere near a Starbucks!

  • I’m with ya sister. No eye averting here. I have a one SB/week rule…Starbucks Saturdays! If I do go more than once I’m only allowing myself tea or coffee the second time.

I do have a GC from Cat & Mike though, so it doesn’t cost me anything! hehe.

Girl, if I had that crazy espresso machine I may never leave the house!! And you should be able to steam egg nog just fine…just make sure to froth the top a bit and then sink the nozzle (if it’s that kind of steamer???). And remember to make it “reduced fat” by halving it with milk. :)

haha, can you tell I used to do this for a living!?

  • aww… poor red cup. But good for you! Love your fancy contraptions at home! I’m totally jealous!

  • Wow….you’re a strong one. I have sbux probably 3-4 times a week….. We just got an espresso machine in August, but I don’t have any fancy syrups or anything yet….

    Great plan gorgeous.

  • I am trying to avoid starbucks, too! We’ll be in it together!! Haha

I need to know more about this Windows Live Writer thing, does it make it easier to upload pictures?!

  • Awesome job, lady! Glad I could give you a nudge in the right direction…:D

I love me a homemade beverage…it always comes out exactly how I want it. Om nom nom.

  • with that machine, I’m think you’ll fill the void. I gave up caffeine this past week…so i suspect sbuxs will be the occasion for me, as opposed to the rule!

(if i come visit, can we make yummy gourmet dec caf? = )

  • I get so inspired by Vanessa’s control of her finances, that girl has *umph* that I lack. I did however buy a resuable red cup that I fill with my coffee from home, it makes me feel like I did purchase something special..
